Rental car on Motorway 7 heading from Bangkok airport to Pattaya, Thailand

Pattaya Airport Car Rental & Transfers Guide

Most visitors reach Pattaya from Suvarnabhumi (BKK), 120 km away via Motorway 7 in 1.5 to 2 hours. But Pattaya has its own airport too: U-Tapao (UTP) sits just 40 km from the city, around 45 minutes by car, with rental desks waiting in the arrival hall.

Which Airport for Pattaya?

Three airports serve Pattaya, and the right one depends on where your flight lands rather than which is closest to the beach. Suvarnabhumi (BKK) is the main international airport and the one most travelers use. Don Mueang (DMK) handles low-cost and regional traffic on Bangkok's north side, which forces a full crossing of the city before you ever point the car south. U-Tapao (UTP) is Pattaya's own airport, far closer to town but still building out its route network.

AirportDistance to PattayaDrive TimeNotes
Suvarnabhumi (BKK) ~120 km 1.5 to 2 h Main airport. Direct via Motorway 7. Peak traffic up to 2.5 to 3.5 h
Don Mueang (DMK) ~150 to 170 km 2 to 2.5 h Must cross Bangkok via Don Mueang Tollway and Sirat Expressway first
U-Tapao (UTP) ~40 km (37 km direct) ~45 min Pattaya's own airport in Rayong. Jomtien is slightly closer

For the overwhelming majority of international arrivals, the journey starts at BKK. It has the most flights, the widest choice of Pattaya car rental suppliers, and the cleanest run south on Motorway 7. U-Tapao is growing fast and is the smart pick when a route happens to serve it, but you cannot count on flying directly into UTP from most origin cities yet.

Driving Bangkok to Pattaya: The Routes

There are three ways to drive from Bangkok to Pattaya, and they are not equal. The fastest by a clear margin is Motorway 7 (the Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya Motorway), a tolled expressway with a 120 km/h limit and no traffic lights to break your momentum. It typically saves 40 to 60 minutes over the alternatives.

RouteCostSpeedVerdict
Motorway 7 (Bangkok–Chonburi–Pattaya) Toll 105 to 160 THB total 120 km/h, no traffic lights Fastest. The default choice
Bang Na–Trat Highway 34 (Burapha Withi elevated) 25 to 50 THB per section Mixed, elevated sections help Reasonable backup if Motorway 7 is jammed
Sukhumvit Highway 3 (coastal) Free Slow, passes every coastal town Avoid for transit. Scenic but not for getting there

Highway 3 (Sukhumvit) threads through every coastal town between Bangkok and Pattaya, so it is genuinely slow for a straight transit run. Save it for short local hops, not the airport drive. Highway 34 with the elevated Burapha Withi expressway is a sensible fallback when Motorway 7 backs up, but Motorway 7 remains the route to plan around.

Where to Stop on Motorway 7

  • Bang Pakong / Khao Din rest area: roughly the midpoint of the drive, with free parking, clean toilets, ATMs, a Cafe Amazon, and a Starbucks. The natural place to break the journey.
  • The Rest Village: a new PTT OR and CP Group complex opening near Sriracha through 2025 to 2026, adding a second full-service stop on the corridor.

Daytime driving is straightforward on Motorway 7: wide lanes, good signage in English, and steady flow. If you land late and you are not used to driving on the left, consider a pre-arranged transfer for the first night and collect a rental car the next morning. Night freight traffic is heavy on this corridor.

Renting at the Airport

Collecting your car on arrival is the most efficient option if you plan to drive straight to Pattaya or stop along the way. All three airports have rental desks, but the depth of choice and the opening hours differ sharply.

  • BKK and DMK: every major brand operates here, most around the clock. Avis, Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Europcar, Thai Rent A Car, Drive Car Rental, and Chic Car Rent all maintain desks, so late arrivals at the big airports are well covered.
  • U-Tapao (UTP): the arrival hall has desks on-site with no shuttle needed. Drive Car Rental, Thai Rent A Car, Chic Car Rent, Europcar, Avis, Thrifty, ASAP, and Bizcar are all present.

Watch the desk hours at the smaller airports. UTP and DMK rental counters often run only about 08:00 to 17:00. If your flight lands in the evening, arrange your pickup in advance and confirm someone will be there to hand over the car, or you risk arriving to a closed desk.

One-way rentals let you pick up at BKK, DMK, or UTP and drop the car in Pattaya. Most suppliers charge a drop fee for this, though it varies by company, car category, and dates. Hertz waives the drop fee on rentals of five days or more, which makes a one-way arrangement excellent value on a longer touring trip. As a rule, an airport pickup runs roughly 5 to 10 percent more than the same car from a city office, so weigh the convenience of collecting on arrival against a slightly lower in-town rate.

Economy cars start from around 500 to 850 THB per day when booked ahead, and prebooking is the single best way to lock a good rate and guarantee the category you want. Compare Pattaya car rental deals to see current airport and in-town prices side by side before you decide where to collect. If you are basing yourself south of the center, the Jomtien car rental page covers pickups closer to that beach.

U-Tapao (UTP): Pattaya's Own Airport

U-Tapao sits in Rayong, about 40 km from central Pattaya (37 km by the direct route on Highway 3) and roughly 45 minutes by car, with Jomtien a touch closer still. It is the centerpiece of the Eastern Economic Corridor's "Eastern Aviation City" project, a major investment designed to turn UTP into a third Bangkok-region hub. A new 3,505 m runway and a Terminal 3 are under construction, with the airport targeting 12 million-plus passengers a year.

Current Routes (2025 to 2026)

  • Domestic: Bangkok Airways to Samui and Phuket, and Thai Lion Air to Udon Thani.
  • International: a growing mix of charter and scheduled flights from China, Russia, the Middle East, and Jakarta.

The practical upside of UTP is proximity. Rental desks are right in the arrival hall, so you can land, sign at the counter, and be on the road to your hotel in well under an hour, with no Bangkok traffic to fight through. If a flight into U-Tapao works for your origin city, it is by far the lowest-friction way to reach Pattaya. The catch remains route coverage: until the network broadens, most travelers will still arrive through Bangkok and drive down.

Prefer Not to Drive? Transfer Options

A rental car is not the only way to reach Pattaya. If you would rather let someone else handle the road, here is how the main options compare for the Bangkok run, plus the limo service from U-Tapao.

OptionPriceTimeFrequency
Roong Reuang Coach bus (BKK to North Pattaya terminal) 149 to 168 THB ~2 h Hourly, 06:00 to 22:00
Bell Travel minivan (BKK to hotel door) 200 to 226 THB ~2.5 h About 6 per day, last at 18:00
Private taxi / transfer (BKK to Pattaya) 1,300 to 1,700 THB ~1.5 h 24/7
UTP airport limo to Pattaya 2,350 to 2,650 THB 45 min On demand

The coach and minivan are unbeatable on price for solo travelers and couples packing light. A private transfer makes sense for a late arrival, a group splitting the fare, or anyone with bulky luggage who wants door-to-door service after a long flight.

A rental car wins the moment you want to range beyond the city itself. With your own vehicle you can reach Jomtien, the Sanctuary of Truth, the islands' ferry piers, and the wider Rayong and Chonburi coast on your own schedule rather than a shuttle's. See our guide to day trips from Pattaya for where a car genuinely pays off. For a beach-only stay in central Pattaya, where Grab and baht buses are everywhere, a transfer in and a car-free week is perfectly workable.

Tolls, Fuel and Road Basics

Motorway 7's toll lanes come in three flavors, and getting this wrong is the most common way a rental ends up with surprise charges. Cash lanes take 20, 50, and 100 THB notes, so keep small notes handy. Easy Pass is an RFID tag that lets you glide through if your car has one fitted. M-Flow lanes are the barrier-free, far-right lanes that read your plate with AI cameras and bill you afterward.

M-Flow warning: if your rental car is not registered for M-Flow and you pass through an M-Flow gate, you must pay online within a short grace window of about two days. Miss it and you face a penalty of ten times the toll plus a fee of around 200 THB, on top of the rental company's own admin charge. If your car has no Easy Pass tag, stick to the CASH lanes, and always confirm the toll setup with the desk at pickup.

Fuel (Mid-2026)

Fuel TypePrice (THB/L)Use For
Gasohol 95 ~41 to 42 Default for most rental cars
Gasohol 91 ~40 to 42 Standard economy cars
E20 ~36 to 37 Only if the fuel cap approves it
Diesel B7 ~39 SUVs and larger diesels

Use Gasohol 95 unless the label on the fuel cap says otherwise. The main station brands along the corridor are PTT, Bangchak (which absorbed Esso), Shell, and Caltex, and they appear regularly between Bangkok and Pattaya, so running low is not a real risk on this route.
